Mastering your SAP Business Technology Platform Service Portfolio
by leveraging SAP LeanIX's feature addition called "Tech Radar reports"

SAP LeanIX's feature addition "Tech radar report" can help you gain a deeper look into the adoption of the broad service portfolio of SAP's Business Technology Platform.
When following Fit-To-Standard approaches, e.g. as part of an SAP S/4 HANA transformation, managers often ask for an overview of standard solution adoption. Besides many efforts by SAP LeanIX within their SAP Journey of providing a comprehensive reference catalog with many best-practice solution capabilities (really great work btw!), an additional, smart approach to validating your SAP BTP adoption is to make it visible by leveraging SAP LeanIX's reporting feature. From assessing the relevant data to receiving the first insights towards your SAP BTP journey is now possible with little effort.
In this article I will give you some insights on how to easily master your SAP Business Technology Platform service portfolio and how RealCore Group GmbH can help discover not only your SAP BTP global account structure but also provide as-is metrics on your consumption to help building a cost governance!
First things first: Assess the technology category and rate the adoption of your SAP BTP IT components
SAP LeanIX has a great usability, also when it comes to assessing information on your fact sheets, even if there are many people involved in your company. So why not use surveys to ask your application owners about the technology category and the adoption rating?
I have created this simple survey to ask every technical responsible person in the company to answer the following questions:

Hint: The shown IT component attributes for the Technology Assessment and Technology Assessment Category are part of the Technology Assessment View, which can be optionally activated by configuring the AI governance extension to the meta model.
(See here: https://docs-eam.leanix.net/docs/ai-governance-extension)

Keep in mind when activating the Technology Assessment view that the standard categories are not that meaningful for what we are trying to achieve here: An overview of the SAP BTP service portfolio adoption. I therefore customized the categories and also changed the order of the values of the Technology Assessment attribute as for some reason the "Adopt" rating will get only one out of four stars, which is a little bit confusing and not matching the actual sense of it. (you can also simply remove the icons - probably much better)
When looking at the SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP always comes up with an image, which is structured in different entities to give an efficient overview of the vast service offering. I talk about the following image - I believe a lot of you know it already as it gets widely displayed when attending SAP events:

AI-powered business processes
I therefore decided to adopt the Technology Assessment categories as the following values to match the shown image:

>
- Application Development
- Automation Services
- Data & Analytics
- AI Services
- Industry Cloud Solutions
- You can customize this in the Meta model configuration menu on your tenant administration site. You should choose the IT component fact sheet type and change the values of the Technology Assessment Category attribute.
Create the Tech radar report based on the assessed information from the first step
After you assessed the relevant information, which will be necessary for an insightful SAP BTP tech radar, the next step will be the creation of the tech radar report itself. So we switch to the reports tab, create a new report, choose the report type "Radar", select the base fact sheet type IT Component and et voilà an tech radar spawned out of nowhere. :-) (Enterprise architecture can be so easy...)
You may now see not the results you would like to see. Therefore at first you should use the filter to only select the SAP BTP service IT components. Then from the report settings dialog, select the Technology Assessment attribute for Ring Category and the Technology Assessment Category for Sector Category. Now your Tech Radar should look like a SAP BTP Tech radar:

SAP BTP Tech Radar

Your management is waiting to get an overview of the SAP BTP service portfolio adoption, therefore we quickly add this report to an presentation, insert the most relevant bullet points and present this to our stakeholders. If you are more of a PowerPoint friend, no worries, you can also export your report to insert it into an fancy slide.

Believe me, you have never gained more insight and value from a data-driven approach to the implementation of the SAP BTP service portfolio in a shorter period of time than with other tools.
Excursus: Integrate your SAP Business Technology Platform global account structure and consumption metrics with your SAP LeanIX tenant to gain valuable insights for cost governance

Back in April, together with my dear colleague Ruben Hellwig, we presented a very efficient way to integrate structural information and consumption metrics of an SAP BTP Global Account with an SAP LeanIX tenant. Impressions LeanIX Insights powered by RealCore 2024 In addition to the already available SaaS Application Landscape Discovery feature of SAP LeanIX, we developed a small integration that not only allows you to synchronise changes to your SAP BTP Global Account with SAP LeanIX, but also to set up a cost governance based on the consumption metrics provided within SAP LeanIX. These metrics will be linked to the relevant IT component to provide full cost and usage insight.
This whole initiative is embedded in our transformation approach and also part of our own continuous innovation journey, combining people and tools to get the most valuable insights into your business.

Closing remarks
There are so many ways and alternatives to get more value from the data that is already part of your daily business. Always seek discomfort when questioning whether you have achieved the full potential of your organisation, because if there is one constant in a sea of variables, it is change. Analysing, planning, adopting, etc. are continuous steps in the life not only of an Enterprise Architect, but of an entire organisation. Thank you for taking the time to read my article and I'm looking forward to connecting with fellow IT architects.
